The next phase of Quest is the Explorer Program. The Explorer Program is comprised of a 26-day summer session for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
We introduce our 3rd grade campers to wilderness programming by focusing on literature and reading. Our award-winning Book Club addresses summer learning loss in reading and vocabulary, and even more importantly, promotes a love of learning. The Book Club is reinforced through the KNOTS (Knowledge of Nature, the Outdoors, and Tripping Skills) program and its staff. As the characters in our campers’ books learn to make fires, catch their own food, build shelters, and more, our 3rd grade campers do the same. Kids reflect on their experiences and learning while connecting this to the journeys of the characters in their books. Overall, the 3rd grade camp program promotes positive attitudes towards recreational and academic reading while encouraging kids to try new activities and work as a team.
Our 4th and 5th grade campers focus on further developing skills learned through Book Club and applying them to real-life situations. This includes wilderness training skills, as kids live out adventures that they have read about and explored during their previous summer. Participation in the 4th and 5th grade program, with its emphasis on wilderness skills, helps prepare campers to be successful as they progress through Quest. Our 4th graders participate in day-long canoe trips on the nearby Black River, an overnight camping trip on camp property, and an overnight camping trip off-site; our 5th graders take part in a longer canoe trip and a two-night backpacking (hiking and camping) trip.
